Safety

Equipment

For the street

Seat belts and air bags pretty much have you covered.

For the track

Helmets, fire jackets, roll bars, 5 point harness, fire extinguisher

Roll bars

Weight  The first thing I hear when people talk about roll bars is how much weight they will add. I decided to weigh one just to show how much weight we are talking about. Go here to see the results.

Safer ?  Roll bars without helmets can be worse than no roll bars. If any part of a roll bar is within reach of your head during a crash it becomes more of a hazard than a safety device. All late model vehicles are required to pass very strict crash tests before they are able to be sold in the US.

5 point harness

While this keeps you from moving around during an out of control situation or a crash it also keeps you from leaning forward or over to either side. We are accustomed to doing this with standard automotive seat belts and for anyone considering a 5 point harness for their daily driver they should be aware that when you are harnessed in, you can’t reach the door to close it, you can’t reach any but the closest dashboard controls, and you can’t turn around and look behind you.

Car Insurance

No matter how hard we try, the complete elimination of accidents is simply impossible.  Even thought Safety is at the top of our priority list, we still need insurance.  When people find out I own a Corvette they most often say "I couldn’t afford the insurance on one of those" but in reality it wasn’t any more expensive than a SUV and almost everyone has one of those.  One key item you have to be careful with is Speeding tickets. They are the single most expensive thing that directly affects your car insurance rates.  Several Insurance companies I called wouldn’t even consider insuring a Corvette period. Regardless of who owned it or how old it was or anything else. They simply stated "we don’t insure Corvettes" end of story.  This is what started the in depth car insurance search for me and allows me to share my findings and success with you.  Finding the least expensive car insurance is time consuming but easy.  The trick is to maintain good coverage from a company you can rely on being there when you really need them, and not pay too much for that good service.  Check back for more updates on these hot money saving topics.

Automotive Carcinogens

Carcinogens are simply things that cause Cancer.  The automobile can have several known carcinogenic components and or materials used to make these components.  Anytime you are working with brake pads or clutch discs that are lined with materials that include asbestos be very careful.  Asbestos is known to cause cancer and mesothelioma when airborne particles are inhaled through the respiratory system.
